In Cameroon's western city of Foumban, sits the newly inaugurated Royal Museum of the Bamoun. The building architecture pays homage to the emblem of the Bamoun - a double-headed snake, a spider, and a double-mounted gong. Over 10, artefacts most of whom century-old objets d'art are housed here, near the royal palace of the Bamouns. King Nabil Mbombo Njoya, the 20th ruler of the Bamouns, inaugurated the museum with Culture minister Pierre Ismaël Bidoung Mkpatt.
Located in the western region of Cameroon, the city of Foumban is only 70 km away from the capital of the region Bafoussam. Foumban is the capital of the Nun Department and Christianity and Islam are the main religions. With a population of , inhabitants and an area of km², it covers almost half of the western region. Thanks to its craftsmanship, Foumban enjoys an international reputation and is also known as the city of arts.
In addition to honoring the storied history of the Bamum people, the Foumban Royal Museum is a surprisingly whimsical building shaped like a two-headed snake mounted by a giant spider. Seven centuries after the Bamum Kingdom was established by its first ruler—Nchare Yen, in —the current Sultan, Ibrahim Mbombo Njoya, is working to preserve the local culture. For the Bamum people, it seems, self-preservation has always been at the heart of whatever venture they undertake. Designed by a local architect, the Foumban Royal Museum is whimsically built in the shape of a two-headed snake mounted by a giant life-like spider.
